NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana on Sunday told a press conference in Botosani that opinion polls „indicate the need for a deeper change in Romania.”
He reacted to a statement made two days ago by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who ironically said that „there is no point” in holding presidential elections as long as Mircea Geoana is placed first in the electorate’s preferences.
„We are in another stage. I believe that Romanians need a different political project, done differently, and I believe that the polls so much invoked by some political leaders indicate the need for a deeper change in Romania,” Geoana said.
Mircea Geoana said that he had a long-standing relationship with the Social Democratic Party, which he had been a leader of, stressing that PSD voters and local Social Democratic elected representatives are „very important” to him.
„You can’t claim anyone’s vote. You have to earn it. We’re talking about party support and such conversations… I think the most important thing is to enjoy people’s trust. Obviously my relationship with the PSD is an old one. I enjoyed leading such an important party in Romania and obviously the voters, supporters and local elected members of the PSD, as well as other parties, are very important to me,” said Mircea Geoana.
